Copes Lane
Private Home
What began as a modest request from Thomas Cochran Homes to craft a fireplace mantel organically evolved into a prestigious and comprehensive design and build project, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and creative vision. This endeavor expanded to encompass the creation of multiple bespoke pieces for a new home, transforming the initial concept into a remarkable showcase of artistry and quality. Below, I elaborate on the significance of this project, the meticulous craftsmanship involved, and the honor of collaborating with one of Canada’s most esteemed builders.
A Transformative Journey
The project’s scope grew naturally from a single fireplace mantel into an ambitious undertaking that included the design and construction of several custom pieces. This organic evolution reflects a dynamic collaboration between the client and craftsman, resulting in a cohesive suite of furnishings that elevate the home’s aesthetic and functionality. Each element was thoughtfully designed and meticulously crafted to harmonize with the space, demonstrating adaptability and a commitment to exceeding expectations.
Craftsmanship and Material Excellence
A standout feature of this project is the use of solid elm wood, a material that embodies durability, beauty, and timeless appeal. Unlike the prevalent use of particleboard, MDF, and plywood—materials that dominate up to 97% of modern furniture production and are often masked with veneers—these pieces celebrate the authenticity and integrity of solid wood. The fireplace mantel, beam system, kitchen table, and bench were all fashioned from live-edge elm, preserving the wood’s natural contours and grain to create striking, one-of-a-kind designs.
Particularly noteworthy is the privilege of re-inventing a family heirloom dining room table and hutch. These cherished pieces, originally crafted by skilled woodworkers, were reimagined with care and precision, breathing new life into their legacy. Working with solid wood from a bygone era, this process not only preserved the heirloom’s sentimental value but also enhanced its functionality and aesthetic for contemporary use. This approach contrasts sharply with the mass-produced, lesser-quality materials common today, underscoring a dedication to superior craftsmanship.
Collaboration with Thomas Cochran Homes
It is an immense honor to partner with Thomas Cochran Homes, a distinguished builder based in Waterdown, Ontario, widely recognized as one of the finest in both Ontario and Canada. Their reputation is bolstered by numerous builder awards, a testament to their excellence in residential construction. Working with such a renowned firm affords a unique opportunity to exercise creative freedom, allowing the design and execution of these pieces to reflect the highest standards of artistry. Their trust in this process amplifies the project’s significance, making it a privilege to contribute to their vision.
Project Scope Overview
The expanded scope of this project includes the following meticulously designed and crafted elements:
Elm Fireplace Mantel: A stunning centerpiece crafted from solid elm, blending warmth and elegance.

Conclusion
This project exemplifies the fusion of creativity, craftsmanship, and collaboration. From its humble origins as a single mantel to its realization as a collection of bespoke furnishings, it reflects an unwavering commitment to quality and innovation. The use of solid wood, the re-invention of a treasured heirloom, and the partnership with Thomas Cochran Homes elevate this endeavor beyond the ordinary, creating lasting pieces that honor both tradition and contemporary design. It has been a distinct privilege to bring this vision to life, crafting works of enduring beauty for a home built by one of Canada’s premier builders.
Client Testimonial
Anyone that has seen Mary’s designs knows how beautiful and creative each piece is. What they may not be aware of is how dedicated she is to everything she creates. Her level of service and attention to detail is above and beyond. Our home has been blessed with several of these pieces and we couldn’t be happier. Mary designed, created and installed our stunning beams in our vaulted living room, our beautiful fireplace mantel and our show stopping kitchen table & bench. We also called on her to refinish an old family table and buffet - “Can I suggest something a little different” she asked? What we didn’t realize at the time was that she would use her tremendous foresight to create a completely new look. She took our very traditional looking dinning room furniture and transformed them into modern and elegant pieces, which still managed to maintain a hint of tradition…absolutely stunning! We are truly happy to have worked with Mary and blissfully enjoy the beautiful pieces that have elevated the look and feel of our home. Thank you Mary for your time, dedication and tremendous talent.
